The bees of the Rockaway peninsula have had their season, and on Wednesday, October 28, the honey goes on sale. RISE, the Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity, is holding a Rockaway Honeyworks bring-your-own-jar sale from 4 to 6 p.m. at its center on Rockaway Beach Boulevard in Arverne. Bring a clean jar and fill it for $2 an ounce.
How it works
The honey is $2 an ounce, with a limit of 16 ounces a person so the end-of-season supply goes around, which makes the maximum $32. RISE asks buyers to bring their own container, which is the BYOB in the event's name.
Where the honey comes from
Rockaway Honeyworks is part of RISE's community and youth development programs, which teach beekeeping, how honey is made and what bees do for the local environment. The honey is made by bees kept on the peninsula itself.
RISE also restores the dunes along the Arverne and Edgemere shoreline, work carried out in large part by local teenagers through its high school internship program.
Also at RISE next week, all free
