The New York Classical Players, a professional chamber orchestra that presents all of its public performances free of admission, play Flushing Town Hall on Thursday, November 5, at 7:30 p.m. The program, titled Brahms and Puts: A Journey to Belief, closes with the Brahms Double Concerto for violin and cello. Admission is free with an RSVP.

The program

The evening has three pieces:

  • Lars-Erik Larsson, Concertino for Double Bass. The opening piece puts the double bass, more often at the back of the orchestra, out front as the soloist.
  • Kevin Puts, Credo. A work by the American composer Kevin Puts, which the program places at the center of the evening.
  • Johannes Brahms, Double Concerto. Flushing Town Hall's listing describes it as Brahms's final orchestral work. It has two soloists, a violin and a cello, playing with and against the orchestra.

The soloists

Violinist Kyung Sun Lee and cellist Clive Greensmith are the soloists in the Brahms. Milad Daniari is the soloist in the Larsson. Dongmin Kim conducts.

About the orchestra

Kim founded the New York Classical Players in 2010 and is its music director. The orchestra plays a mix of standard orchestral and chamber repertoire, world premieres, contemporary music and pieces that are rarely programmed, and it performs across New York City, northern New Jersey and beyond. All of its public performances are presented free of admission, which is why this concert costs nothing to attend.

How to go

The concert is free, but Flushing Town Hall asks for an RSVP, which is taken through an Eventbrite link on the event page. Questions go to the box office at (718) 463-7700, extension 222.

Flushing Town Hall is at 137-35 Northern Boulevard in Flushing. The 7 train's last stop, Flushing-Main Street, is within walking distance.

More on the Town Hall calendar

The concert sits in a full stretch for the venue. On Saturday, November 7, the Queens Jazz Orchestra, led by Antonio Hart, plays a centennial concert for saxophonist Jimmy Heath. On Tuesday, November 10, the Town Hall hosts an artist conversation, Framing America, tied to its current photography exhibition Portraits of America, which is on view through November 10. And on Wednesday, November 11, its monthly jazz jam honors musicians who served in the military, led by saxophonist Carol Sudhalter.
