Pianist Aaron Parks leads a trio with bassist Ben Street and drummer Billy Hart at the Village Vanguard in Greenwich Village through Sunday, November 1, and pianist Ethan Iverson follows with a sextet from Tuesday, November 3, through Sunday, November 8. Between the two runs, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra plays its standing Monday night on November 2. The club, in the basement at 178 Seventh Avenue South, has occupied that address since 1935.

Aaron Parks Trio, through November 1

Parks opened his week at the Vanguard on Tuesday, October 27, and plays two sets a night through Sunday. The trio pairs him with Ben Street on bass and Billy Hart on drums. Each night has an 8 p.m. set and a 10 p.m. set, and the trio's run closes with the Sunday sets on November 1. The Vanguard's schedule page lists the full lineup for each engagement along with a ticket link for every night.

Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Monday, November 2

On Monday the stage goes to the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, the big band that has played the club on Monday nights since February 1966. It began as the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, booked by club owner Max Gordon for three Mondays that winter, and the engagement was extended indefinitely. The club counts more than 2,700 Monday nights since then.

The current lineup lists Ted Nash, Billy Drewes, Rich Perry, Ralph Lalama and Gary Smulyan on saxophones; Brian Pareschi, Jon Shaw, Terell Stafford and Scott Wendholt on trumpets; Dion Tucker, Jason Jackson, Robert Edwards and Max Seigel on trombones; and a rhythm section of Adam Birnbaum on piano, David Wong on bass and John Riley on drums.

Ethan Iverson Sextet, November 3 to 8

Iverson, a pianist, brings a six-piece band for six nights starting Tuesday, November 3. The group includes Sam Newsome on saxophone, Jacob Garchik on trombone, Peter Washington on bass and Kush Abadey on drums. The trumpet chair changes over the week: Skylar Tang plays Tuesday through Friday, and Jason Palmer takes over on Saturday and Sunday.

How the Vanguard works

Shows start at 8 and 10 p.m. Seating for the first show begins at 7 p.m. and for the second at 9:30 p.m. Admission is paid in advance online, and there is a one-drink minimum per person on top of the door price, which can be met with soft drinks, juice or bottled water. The club serves no food, and outside food is not allowed. All major credit cards are accepted.

Seating is first come, first served, and specific tables cannot be reserved. Reservations are not taken by phone or email. Online sales close one hour before showtime, after which entry is possible on standby but not guaranteed. The club notes that it often releases discounted tickets for some 10 p.m. shows during the week. Parties of five or more have a 20 percent service charge added, and groups are capped at eight people seated together.

Refunds are limited to requests made within 24 hours of purchase, and tickets cannot be exchanged or transferred to another show, though a ticket holder can pass a ticket to someone else, who gives the buyer's name at the door. Inside, the club asks guests to silence phones and keep conversation to a minimum during sets.
