Hineni: The Transcendent Song of the Shofar
Sunday, December 13, 2026 · Ansche Chesed, 251 W. 100th St., Upper West Side
For thousands of years, the shofar has sounded in synagogues as a Jewish call to prayer, reflection and repentance. Now, it will be heard in a very different way: as a melodic instrument, capable of producing intricate musical passages rather than the familiar ritual blasts.
Bar Zemach, a shofar-soloist whose playing has been described as defying “the laws of physics,” will appear with renowned pianist Jascha Nemtsov, together with the Cassatt String Quartet and Cantor-Composers Gerald Cohen and Natasha Hirschhorn. The program features the New York premiere of Cohen’s Hineni (Here Am I), composed specifically for Zemach’s reimagined vision of the shofar.
Tickets are $25 (advance), $30 (at the door) and $10 (students). A pre-concert talk and interactive shofar workshop will take place at 6:15 p.m.
