SUMMARY:Hineni: The Transcendent Song of the Shofar
LOCATION:Ansche Chesed\, 251 W. 100th St.\, Upper West Side
DESCRIPTION:For thousands of years\, the shofar has sounded in synagogues
as a Jewish call to prayer\, reflection and repentance. Now\, it will be
heard in a very different way: as a melodic instrument\, capable of produ
cing intricate musical passages rather than the familiar ritual blasts.\n
Bar Zemach\, a shofar-soloist whose playing has been described as defying
“the laws of physics\,” will appear with renowned pianist Jascha Nemtsov
\, together with the Cassatt String Quartet and Cantor-Composers Gerald C
ohen and Natasha Hirschhorn. The program features the New York premiere o
f Cohen’s Hineni (Here Am I)\, composed specifically for Zemach’s reimagi
ned vision of the shofar. \nTickets are $25 (advance)\, $30 (at the door)
and $10 (students). A pre-concert talk and interactive shofar workshop w
ill take place at 6:15 p.m.\n\nhttps://newyorkcitywave.com/events/12463/h
