Words on Warren, the children's bookshop at 52 Warren Street, has filled its November calendar with authors and illustrators reading from new books, starting the weekend of November 7 and 8 and running through a Monday evening talk on November 16. Most of the events are free, several need no sign up at all, and they are sized for the small reading nooks of a neighborhood store rather than an auditorium.
The first weekend: November 7 and 8
- Saturday, November 7, 11:30 a.m.: author and illustrator Amelia Bothe reads Mia's Cheetah, a picture book about a girl on a long car ride to her grandmother's house whose father teaches her a game that turns the drive into an adventure.
- Saturday, November 7, 3 p.m.: author Megan Wagner Lloyd and illustrator Abhi Alwar launch Super Pancake and the Mystery of the Missing Egg, the next graphic novel adventure for Peggy Pancake, who heads to camp to find her missing mentor, Professor Egg. Registration is through Eventbrite.
- Sunday, November 8, 11:30 a.m.: Kelsey Garrity-Riley reads Fritz, her picture book about an introverted chanterelle mushroom who spends a day trying to keep up with his outgoing friend Pip. Fritz has already appeared in the shop's front window, which the store's creative director redesigns each month around its books and visiting authors.
- Sunday, November 8, 3 p.m.: the last session of the shop's writing workshop series with authors Melissa Dassori and Yvette Clark. This one, called Telling New York Tales, has children use the city as material for their own stories. It is for ages 8 to 11, free, and requires an RSVP.
The second weekend and a Monday night talk
- Saturday, November 14, 11:30 a.m.: Doreen Cronin, the author behind the Click, Clack series with illustrator Betsy Lewin, reads Click, Clack... Tooth Fairy!, in which Duck fills in for an overworked tooth fairy.
- Sunday, November 15, 11:30 a.m.: illustrator Doug Salati reads Cow and Sow, a picture book about two friends who find a frozen pond and take up figure skating. Salati and his collaborator previously made Lawrence in the Fall, an Ezra Jack Keats Honor book.
- Sunday, November 15, 2:30 p.m.: a storytime for A Year of Kites, a picture book that travels to kite festivals from Greece to New Zealand to Japan.
- Monday, November 16, 6:30 p.m.: author Jaclyn Moriarty talks with Rebecca Stead, the author of Liar and Spy and The Lost Library, about The Accidental World-Slip of Astrid Verity, the newest novel in Moriarty's Kingdoms and Empires series for middle grade readers. The talk is free with an RSVP.
On top of the author visits, the shop keeps its regular weekend storytime and craft every Saturday and Sunday at 11:30 a.m., with no sign up required.
About the shop
Words on Warren opened in the fall of 2025, between Church Street and West Broadway. It is owned by Jean S. Maung, a Tribeca resident and mother of three, and its shelves are stocked for children of every reading level, from board books through middle grade novels. Inside are reading nooks with couches and stuffed versions of book characters, plus a typewriter where customers can leave a note about what they are reading for the next visitor. The shop also takes preorders, offers signed copies from visiting authors, and invites writers and illustrators to pitch their own events.
Hours
- Monday: 2 to 6 p.m.
- Tuesday through Friday: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Saturday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The practical next step
Storytimes are walk-in, so arrive a few minutes before 11:30 a.m. for a seat on the floor. For the November 7 Super Pancake launch, the November 8 writing workshop and the November 16 talk, register ahead through the links on the shop's events page, since space in the store is limited.
