Williamsburg Garment Company, the denim label and tailoring studio led by designer Maurice Malone, now has a street-level shop at 42 West Street (Store #101) in Greenpoint. The new storefront sits directly across the street from the company's factory at 67 West Street, which means a pair of jeans can be designed, sewn, sold and hemmed on the same block.

The shop is now the company's walk-in address for shopping, alteration drop-offs and pickups, and in-person fittings. The factory across West Street stays focused on manufacturing, custom-made jeans, complex repairs and classes.

What is inside the new shop

The store carries Williamsburg Garment Company's own jeans alongside a selection of denim brands from Japan and elsewhere. Brands listed on the company's site include Momotaro Jeans, Burgus Plus, Benzak Denim Developers, TCB (Two Cats Brand), Lee and Wrangler. Recent listings on the site show selvedge jeans from those labels priced roughly between $240 and $315 a pair.

The house line covers a wide size range. According to the company, men's waist sizes run from 28 to 50, women's sizes run from 24 to 32, and men's tall jeans come in 38-inch and 40-inch inseams. Each house fit is named for a Brooklyn street, a nod to the company's start in Williamsburg in 2011.

Tailoring without an appointment

A large part of the business is alterations, and the company says no appointment is needed. Customers can walk in during open hours to drop off jeans, pants or knitwear. The company tailors any brand, not only the jeans it sells, and it works with industrial denim equipment such as chain-stitch hemming machines, flat-felled seam machines and bar-tackers.

Posted prices on the company's site include $25 for chain-stitch hemming on jeans, $30 for standard pants hemming and $70 to take in the waist of a pair of jeans. Same-day, while-you-wait chain-stitch hemming is available on most jeans and pants when the shop is open. Repairs, tapering and crotch mending are also offered, and people outside the city can mail in their jeans using the company's online ordering system.

For those who want something made from scratch, the company offers two custom routes. One is a fully custom pair built from a pattern drafted to the customer's own measurements. The other lets a customer choose fabric, thread colors, buttons and rivets for one of the company's existing fits. Either can be finished raw or with an industrial wash.

A jeans-making class in the factory

The factory at 67 West Street also hosts Denim Workshop, a nine-week, hands-on course taught by Malone. Students learn the full process of making a pair of jeans: factory workflow and seam types, digital pattern-making with TUKAcad software, fit corrections, cutting and assembly on industrial machines, and finally sewing a finished pair.

The fall 2026 session began Sunday, Oct. 4, and meets Sundays from 5 to 7 p.m., with no class on Nov. 29 and a final session on Dec. 6. The full course is listed at $2,500, and single sessions are listed at $315 each. Because each class builds on the last, the company advises against joining partway through and points newcomers to Denim Talk, an online meetup where Malone takes questions about denim design, construction, sourcing and building a brand. Enrollment is kept small.

The company's site also notes that it is expanding low-minimum, small-batch manufacturing for independent denim brands, from pattern development through production, all done in Brooklyn.

About the designer

Malone started the company in 2011 as a one-person operation. Before that, he was known for the 1990s streetwear labels Mojeans and Maurice Malone Designs, and for The Hip Hop Shop in Detroit, a clothing store and open-mic rap battle spot that the company's history page connects to the inspiration behind the 2002 film 8 Mile. In 2013 the company introduced its Hope Street jeans, its first jeans made in the U.S.A.

The company was founded in Williamsburg, as the name suggests, and has since settled in Greenpoint. Its history page says alterations grew from a small share of the business to most of its work after 2020, when it shifted toward tailoring services.

Hours and getting there

The shop at 42 West Street, Store #101, Brooklyn, NY 11222, is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. The phone number for both the store and the factory is 646-367-1720.

West Street runs along the Greenpoint waterfront. The G train's Greenpoint Avenue station is a short walk east, and the NYC Ferry's Greenpoint stop at the foot of India Street is also nearby. If you have a pair of jeans that need hemming, the simplest next step is to bring them by during open hours; the shop's website lists every alteration and price before you go.
