Fall is peak migration season along the Hudson River, and Wave Hill, the public garden on the river in Riverdale, is giving the second weekend of November to the birds passing over it. The garden also changed its schedule on Sunday, Nov. 1: winter hours are now in effect.
New hours and admission
From Nov. 1 the grounds are open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, with last admission at 4 p.m. Admission for adults is $10, and members get in free. Every Thursday, admission is free all day for individual visitors (organized groups excluded). Parking is $13, or $10 for members.
Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 7 and 8: Raptors in Autumn Sky
The weekend's family art project runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days in Wave Hill House. Children and parents watch for migrating hawks circling above the river and then build a raptor glider to fly in the autumn wind. It is free with admission to the grounds and needs no registration. Wave Hill House has an accessible ground-level entrance.
Sunday, Nov. 8: a morning birding walk
Naturalist Gabriel Willow leads Fall Birding from 9:30 to 11 a.m., looking for resident and migrating birds in the gardens, the woodland and the sky over the river. The route uses mixed-surface paths with changes in elevation at a slow to moderate pace, and a limited number of walking sticks can be borrowed at the Perkins Visitor Center. The walk costs $20 including admission (members save 10 percent), and advance registration is encouraged online or at 718-549-3200, extension 251. Refunds are not available within five days of the walk.
Sunday, Nov. 8: yoga facing the Palisades
Later that day, from 4 to 5 p.m., Sara Hart of Artemis Audio & Ayurveda leads Fiery Fall Sunset Yoga on the Great Lawn, facing the Hudson and the Palisades as the foliage turns. It is a beginner-level class with modifications, open to ages 12 and up with an adult. Bring a mat. It is drop-in, costs $25 including admission, moves indoors in bad weather and is canceled in heavy rain.
Gallery tours twice a week
Through Nov. 28, gallery greeters lead free 45-minute tours of the current exhibitions in Glyndor Gallery and the Sunroom Project Space on Thursdays and Saturdays at 2 p.m., with some dates excluded. A Thursday visit pairs the tour with free admission.
Getting there
Wave Hill is at 4900 Independence Avenue in Riverdale. Register for the birding walk at wavehill.org, and check the garden's calendar before a weekend visit, since special event weekends carry different prices.
