A new edition of the East Village Vintage Clothing Map is out, plotting 42 secondhand and vintage shops on a single sheet that stretches from Avenue B west to Broadway and from 14th Street down to Houston. The map comes from East Village Vintage Collective, the two-floor shop at 545 East 12th Street between Avenues A and B, which posts the current version on its website and keeps printed copies at the store.

Each shop gets a numbered, color-coded dot on a simple street grid, with Tompkins Square Park as the anchor in the middle. The legend runs down the bottom of the page, so you can pick a block, read off the names and plan a route on foot.

Where the shops cluster

Laid out on one page, the map makes it clear that East Village thrifting happens in pockets. A few of the densest:

  • East Ninth Street between Second and First Avenues: seven dots crowd this one block, including Fabulous Fanny's, Spark Pretty, Downtown Funk and Junk, 9th St Vintage / Dated Vintage, Cloak & Dagger, Duo NYC and Cobblestones Vintage.
  • East 11th Street just east of Second Avenue: Tokyo Joe, Buffalo Exchange and Vintage Reserve sit side by side.
  • East 10th Street facing Tompkins Square Park: Project Vintage, Wait A Second and Hanzawa Market line the park's north edge between Avenues A and B.
  • Near East Third Street and Avenue B: 3rd & B'zaar and Jane's Exchange share a corner.
  • East Seventh Street and St. Marks Place: Crossroads Trading, Enzs, AuH2O Thriftique and Tokio 7 fill the blocks east of Second Avenue.

The western edge of the map, between Broadway and Third Avenue around Astor Place, picks up Metropolis Vintage, Other People's Clothes, Pop-Up Vintage, Search & Destroy, Theo's Haberdashery, Flamingos Vintage Pound, Nomad Vintage, Stock Vintage, Thrift NYC and Cure Thrift. Farther south, below East Fourth Street between the Bowery and First Avenue, are Quality Mending Co, Pimbeche Vintage and Angela's Vintage Boutique, and down along Houston are Vintage Store and Rogue Outlet.

The collective puts itself at number one on the map, on East 12th Street near Avenue B, with Cauz for Pawz, Eloise & Daisy, L Train Vintage and East Village Thrift scattered along the blocks to the north and west. Mr Throwback and Annie's Thrift & Vintage sit just off St. Marks Place near Avenue A, and Mag New York City is on Avenue A a few blocks south.

About the shop behind the map

East Village Vintage Collective opened in 2015 with the aim of bringing back some of the older East Village spirit its owners missed. It calls itself a curated thrift store: the owners pick through secondhand racks so shoppers do not have to, and keep prices low. The store also carries consignment pieces from other local vintage sellers, does not split its racks into men's and women's sections, and describes itself as a women-owned small business. It rents clothing at a discount for photo shoots, music videos, film and television.

The shop's prices in person run lower than on its website, and it offers free in-store pickup for online orders placed by New Yorkers. For ongoing neighborhood thrift news between editions, the collective points readers to its @eastvillagevintagemap account on Instagram.

How to get a copy

View the full map on East Village Vintage Collective's website, or stop by the store at 545 East 12th Street and ask for a printed copy. The shop is open Wednesday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.; it is closed Monday and Tuesday. Questions go to 646-476-8036 or evvintagecollective@gmail.com. The closest subway is the L train to 1 Av, under a ten-minute walk; the 6 train to Astor Pl puts you at the western end of the map, near the Third and Fourth Avenue shops.

Hours vary across the 42 shops on the map, and many open around midday, so a weekend afternoon is the easiest time to walk a full loop.
