A group of New York City women who started out in the graffiti scene of the 1990s and 2000s, as taggers, bombers and piecers, now run stores, blow glass, design clothes, paint murals and shoot photographs. Their work fills Vandals to Vanguard at BronxArtSpace on Manida Street in Hunts Point, and Saturday, Oct. 24, is the last day to see it, with a closing reception at the gallery.
The show
The exhibition was curated by the artist KayLove, who also shows her own work in it. The other artists are JAKEE, QUEEN ANDREA, CLAW, SHIRO1, LEX, MRSBX and MOKA213. Between them, their careers now take in store ownership, glassblowing, textiles, photography, fashion design, mural painting and graphic design.
The gallery presents those careers as a continuation of graffiti rather than a break from it. Each artist contributes a short written reflection on her connection to graffiti and how her path unfolded. Portraits of all of them, taken by Bronx photographer Abigail Montes, a member of the collective Seis del Sur, hang with the work.
The show opened on Sept. 11 with a reception and a DJ set, and it held a fashion show and artist talk on Oct. 16.
