Greenpoint's week ahead is close to home: a volunteer morning in WNYC Transmitter Park by the East River, a garden educator on the library's roof, a murder mystery night for teens and a free hygiene pantry that is open whenever the library is. All of it is within walking distance of Manhattan Avenue.
Help clean up WNYC Transmitter Park, Sunday, Oct. 25
The Friends of WNYC Transmitter Park are running an It's My Park volunteer session on Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon, working in all of the park's gardens to clean up and beautify them before winter. It is free, and NYC Parks lists the same session again the following Sunday, Nov. 1, at the same time. The park is at the end of Greenpoint Avenue on the waterfront.
Garden hours on the library roof, Fridays
The Greenpoint Library and Environmental Education Center, at 107 Norman Avenue at Leonard Street, has a demonstration garden on its third-floor roof. On Fridays from 3 to 4 p.m., if the weather allows, a garden educator is up there to answer questions and show visitors what is growing. It is open to all ages. The next sessions are today, Oct. 23, and Oct. 30.
A murder mystery party for teens, Wednesday, Oct. 28
The same branch hosts a Clue-style murder mystery for teens ages 13 to 19 on Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 4 to 5 p.m. in its Eco Lab 3, with puzzles to solve and codes to crack along the way.
A free hygiene and period pantry, all week
On the library's second floor, in the Teen Zone, the Cycle Alliance runs a free pantry of period and hygiene products, stocked by community donations and joined by zines and bookmarks. It is open during all branch hours, to people of every age and gender. Adults are asked to check in with library staff before going into the Teen Zone.
Getting around
The G stops at Nassau Avenue, the closest station to the library, and at Greenpoint Avenue, the closest to Transmitter Park. Check the Brooklyn Public Library's Greenpoint page for branch hours before visiting.
