The Greenpoint Library and Environmental Education Center, at 107 Norman Avenue, has a full week of free programs, and the one that stands out happens on the roof. On Thursday evening, teens can bring their questions about stars and planets to an astronomy session that moves up to the building's rooftop garden with a telescope when the sky is clear.

Thursday, Nov. 5: Astronomy for Teens

The program, at 6 p.m. for ages 13 to 19, covers the history of how people have read the sky as well as the stars and planets themselves. It meets in Eco Lab 3, the library's teen zone, or on the Rooftop Demonstration Garden when the sky allows the telescope to come out. The library asks participants to dress for the weather, since part of the evening may be outdoors.

Thursday, Nov. 5: Keep Calm and Carry Yarn

Earlier the same evening, at 5:30 p.m., the library's handwork circle meets for two hours. Knitters, crocheters, menders and anyone doing cross-stitch or embroidery are welcome to bring a project, and teens are welcome too. The group meets every week, beginners can get a lesson in knitting, crochet or mending, and the library can provide supplies for learners. Lessons are arranged ahead of time by email through the library's event page.

Wednesday, Nov. 4: Our Garden Club

At 4:30 p.m., children ages 6 to 12 plant seeds and follow what grows, with stories, songs and dancing along the way, and they take plants and flowers home. The club is set up for children with and without disabilities.

Monday, Nov. 2: Chair Yoga and Dungeons & Dragons

Today at 1:30 p.m., instructor Stefanie Mihoulides leads Chair Yoga and Mindfulness for adults, a seated sequence with guided breathing designed for all ages and abilities.

At 4 p.m., teens 13 and older can sit down to a game of Dungeons & Dragons. The session is run by teens, with a teen volunteer as the game leader.

Getting there

The library is at Norman Avenue and Leonard Street. The G train stops at Nassau Avenue, about three blocks away. All of the programs above are free. Check the Brooklyn Public Library calendar before you head out, since times and rooms can change.
