Three things are happening in Flushing between Wednesday and Saturday: a theater workshop at the library that ends with a new play about Queens, a volunteer morning in Kissena Park's woods, and a Halloween afternoon at Queens Botanical Garden.
Wednesday: Roundabout Theatre Company at Flushing Library
Roundabout Theatre Company teaching artists Ryan C. Kim and Amy E. Witting begin In the Heart of Queens, an eight-week playmaking workshop, on Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Flushing Library, 41-17 Main Street.
The series is tied to The Heart, an Off-Broadway musical adapted from Maylis de Kerangal's novel Réparer les Vivants. Participants write and perform together, drawing on their own memories, conversations and the library's collections, and the group shares a new performance about Queens communities at the end. It is open to teens, adults and seniors. To reserve a spot, email FL-Programs@queenslibrary.org. The library's number is 718-661-1200.
Friday: Forest restoration in Kissena Park
NYC Parks' Stewardship Team is looking for volunteers on Friday, Oct. 30, from 9 a.m. to noon, to work in Kissena Park's forested areas. Volunteers help with ongoing restoration and learn why species diversity matters to the health of a forest. The work is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service.
The group meets at the Kissena Park Velodrome parking lot. It is free, space is limited and registration is required through the NYC Parks Stewardship page. Wear sturdy shoes, long sleeves and long pants, and clothes that can get dirty. Volunteers under 18 need a chaperone, and groups of 10 or more can write to stewardship@parks.nyc.gov.
Saturday: Halloween at the Garden
Queens Botanical Garden, 43-50 Main Street, hosts Halloween at the Garden on Saturday, Oct. 31, from noon to 5 p.m. Children can show off their costumes and walk a trick-or-treat trail, and the afternoon includes crafts, a walk about spooky plants, live performances and a vendor fair of local businesses. Adults can try harvest beers and ciders. The event is sponsored by the upcoming film The Cat in the Hat.
Members get in free. Tickets are $10 for non-members and $8 for children. The garden's number is 718-886-3800.
Getting there
The 7 train ends at Flushing-Main Street, a few blocks from the library; the garden is farther south on Main Street at 43-50. The Kissena workday meets at the Kissena Park Velodrome parking lot.
