Stephanie Dinkins grew up in Tottenville, at the far southern tip of Staten Island. On Saturday, November 14, the Staten Island Museum opens a major solo exhibition of her work, Stephanie Dinkins: Anchoring Home, at its galleries in Snug Harbor. The museum describes it as a homecoming: an artist whose work on artificial intelligence has been shown and honored nationally, showing it in her home borough.
Who Stephanie Dinkins is
Dinkins is a transdisciplinary artist and educator whose work sits where art and technology meet, particularly around who builds AI systems and whose stories those systems carry. The museum lists her recent honors: she was the inaugural recipient of the LG Guggenheim Award in 2023, an award for artists working with technology; she was named that year to Time's list of the 100 most influential people in AI; she is a Schmidt AI 2050 Senior Fellow; and she was a Lincoln Center Collider Fellow in 2025.
What is in the show
According to the museum, Anchoring Home is built around interactive, participatory and sensory pieces that look at how community, technology and the natural world relate to one another. The centerpiece is an immersive work in which an AI system takes in stories that have been collected and turns them into a narrative that keeps changing in real time, so what a visitor encounters depends on when they walk in.
The exhibition asks visitors to think about who decides what AI becomes, and how systems might be designed with equity, care and shared decision-making built in from the start. The museum has said more details, including public programs, will be announced ahead of the opening.
The exhibition is supported by the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Foundation.
Opening weekend
Museum members get a first look at a preview on Thursday, November 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. The public opening is Saturday, November 14, from 2 to 4 p.m., and the museum has flagged it as the featured event on its fall calendar.
Other things on the museum's calendar
Before the opening, the museum's calendar lists a bird and nature walk at Fresh Kills North Park on Wednesday, November 4, from 10 a.m. to noon.
