Long Island City's week runs from free sound art on Purves Street to a nature workshop in Isamu Noguchi's garden, with a waterfront cleanup in between and a Halloween street party on the calendar for the following Saturday. Here is what is on, Monday, October 19, through Sunday, October 25, and what to know before you go.
Three new solo shows at SculptureCenter
SculptureCenter, at 44-19 Purves Street, is in the middle of a fall season of three solo exhibitions made through its Commissioning Program, all on view through December 28:
- Cevdet Erek: Americas brings together five sound works the artist made over the past decade for Mexico City, Chicago, San Francisco, São Paulo and the US Embassy in The Hague, along with a new piece commissioned for SculptureCenter. Erek trained as both an architect and a sound engineer.
- Aziz Hazara: Coming Home
- Yining Fei: Feral Sediment
Admission is free. SculptureCenter is open Thursday through Monday, noon to 6 pm, and lists Court Square (E, F, G and 7), Queens Plaza (E, F and R) and Queensboro Plaza (7, N and W) as its nearest stations.
Thursday: a morning cleanup at Hunter's Point South Park
NYC Parks and the Hunters Point Parks Conservancy run an It's My Park volunteer session at Hunter's Point South Park on Thursday, October 22, from 10 am to noon. It is free, and the meeting point will be posted on the Parks event page. If Thursday does not work, the same session repeats on October 29.
Saturday: a nature workshop for families at the Noguchi Museum
The Noguchi Museum, at 9-01 33rd Road at Vernon Boulevard, holds Art for Families: Nature on Saturday, October 24, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, for families with children ages 5 to 11. Families start in Noguchi's sculpture garden, then move to the museum's Education Studio to make art from natural materials.
The cost is $24 per family and includes museum admission. It is free for members at the Family level and above, for SNAP/EBT and WIC cardholders, and for Cool Culture members. Space is limited and registration is required in advance.
Parents with babies have their own slot the next morning: the museum's Stroller Tour, for caregivers of infants up to 12 months, runs Sunday, October 25, from 10:30 to 11:30 am, also with advance registration.
All week: a ghost hunt for kids on Malt Drive
Nana's Wonderland LIC, at 2-20 Malt Drive near the waterfront, runs a Ghost Scavenger Hunt for children every day from Monday, October 19, through Sunday, October 25, from 9 am to 7 pm, according to the Long Island City Partnership's listing. Children search the venue for hidden ghosts. The listing does not give a price, so check with the venue before you go.
Next Saturday: Trick-or-Streets on Vernon Boulevard
Plan ahead for Halloween itself. The Long Island City Partnership closes Vernon Boulevard to cars between 46th and 50th Avenues on Saturday, October 31, from 3 to 5 pm for LIC Trick-or-Streets, with the band The Only Bay All Stars playing at 4 pm.
