Saint Vitus, the heavy-music bar and venue that started in Greenpoint in 2011, has a new home at 428 Troutman Street in Bushwick, a short walk from the Jefferson Street stop on the L train. Its calendar for the new room runs from this week into December, with metal, hardcore and punk shows plus a free, all-ages Halloween Market on Sunday, Oct. 25.

According to the venue, the new location keeps the DIY and rock-subculture spirit of the original while adding upgraded sound and lights, a bit more space and, in the venue's own description, better air conditioning. Saint Vitus also has a new partner: EMP, who the venue says has been part of the city's underground music scene since the early 1990s and is helping keep Saint Vitus independent.

How it started

Saint Vitus was founded by longtime musicians and bartenders George Souleidis and Arty Shepherd, who turned a former plumbing school in Greenpoint into a dark, compact club. Arty's bandmate David Castillo booked the back room. The early calendar mixed metal, punk and hardcore with goth, post-punk and industrial, and the venue's history page lists Deafheaven, Pallbearer, Chelsea Wolfe and Krallice among the acts that played there as they were building audiences. Over the years the stage also hosted Nirvana, Megadeth, Anthrax, Neurosis, Killing Joke, Refused and Sick of It All, according to the venue.

Beyond concerts, Saint Vitus has hosted markets, fitness classes, film screenings, book signings and weddings, and the new calendar keeps that range.
