Roulette, the performance space at 509 Atlantic Avenue in Boerum Hill, has four nights of new and experimental music lined up this week, and two of them are anniversaries of a kind. On Wednesday, the New York chapter of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians marks 61 years of the organization. On Saturday, the M³ Festival returns for its fifth in-person edition with 11 sets in one evening.
Saturday, Nov. 7: the M³ Festival
M³, short for Mutual Mentorship for Musicians, is a nonprofit mentorship program created by the musicians Jen Shyu and Sara Serpa. It pairs composer-performers in cohorts, the first of which began at the summer solstice of 2020, and it commissions new work from them. The festival is where much of that work is heard.
This year's edition runs marathon style, with 11 sets and 33 musicians. The lineup includes drummer Terri Lyne Carrington with her Art of Living project, bassist William Parker with Patricia Nicholson in a new work called Leaf Returned to Tree, vocalist Theo Bleckmann, and Martha Redbone on voice and percussion with Aaron Whitby and Charlie Burnham. The Marta Sanchez Trio plays, as do pairings formed inside the program, among them Yuhan Su and Noa Fort with Stephan Crump and Tomas Fujiwara, and Melissa Almaguer and Ge Linna with saxophonist Caroline Davis.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the music starts at 7. General admission is $35, premium seating near the front is $60, and a $100 ticket adds a 6 p.m. reception at Roulette before the show. Anyone who cannot be there can watch a free livestream from 7 p.m., which stays archived afterward.
Wednesday, Nov. 4: the AACM at 61
The AACM was founded in Chicago in 1965 by Muhal Richard Abrams, Jodie Christian, Kelan Phil Cohran and Steve McCall, and it is one of the longest-running musicians' associations in the United States. Its New York chapter was started in 1983 by members who had moved east.
The anniversary concert has two bands. Pianist Adegoke Steve Colson and vocalist Iqua Colson lead a group with Steven Bernstein on trumpet, Luke Stewart on bass and Chris Beck on drums. JD Parran, on saxophone, clarinet and flutes, leads Spirit Stage 3 with Christopher Dean Sullivan on bass, Alexis Marcelo on piano and Michael T.A. Thompson on percussion. Richarda Abrams hosts.
Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door and $20 for students and seniors with ID.
Tuesday and Thursday
The week opens Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 8 p.m. with Cecilia Lopez's new quartet Filter Four, which works across the line between acoustic and electronic sound, preceded by Melissa Almaguer in a solo set of experimental tap dance. Tickets are $25.
On Thursday, Nov. 5, at 8 p.m., Sahba Motallebi plays the tar, the Persian long-necked lute, alone and then with her ensemble, in an evening of Persian music. Tickets are $35.
