Ten artists who make their work in the studios at Snug Harbor are showing it side by side in PROXIMITY, an exhibition in the Main Hall Gallery of the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art on Staten Island's North Shore. The show opened on Oct. 2 and runs through Sunday, Dec. 13, and admission is $5, or $4 for students and seniors.
What the show is about
Snug Harbor runs a studio program in which artists in residence work inside the campus's historic buildings. PROXIMITY is built around that program. Rather than grouping the artists by style, Snug Harbor organized the show around the fact that they work close to one another, and around how being near other artists, across years and through working relationships, shapes what each of them makes.
The work spans painting, photography and mixed media.

When to go
The gallery is open for PROXIMITY on Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 7 p.m. and on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Newhouse Center is in Building C, the Main Hall, and Snug Harbor's site map shows the way from the gates. The show is supported by the New York State Council on the Arts, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs with the City Council, and the Samuel I. Newhouse Foundation.
Also at Snug Harbor this weekend
On Saturday, Oct. 24, from 2 to 4 p.m., Snug Harbor's Harbor Hounds group holds its annual Halloween costume contest and parade for dogs on the South Meadow lawn. It is free for Harbor Hounds members and $5 for everyone else. The gallery is open the same afternoon, so a visit can take in both.
Getting there
Snug Harbor is at 1000 Richmond Terrace, west of the St. George Ferry Terminal. From the St. George Ferry Terminal, the S40 and S44 buses run along Richmond Terrace past the campus.
