The New Dorp Library reopens on Monday, Oct. 19, after a closure for building work. The New York Public Library replaced the branch's heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems so the building at 309 New Dorp Lane stays comfortable in summer and winter alike.

The library describes New Dorp as one of the busiest branches on Staten Island, which made its absence felt. While the doors were closed, NYPL's Staten Island Bookmobile parked near the branch on some days, and patrons were pointed to three nearby branches: Charleston at 225 Bricktown Way, Great Kills at 56 Giffords Lane and Dongan Hills at 1617 Richmond Road.

What changed

The project was mechanical rather than cosmetic: new heating, ventilation and cooling equipment throughout. NYPL ties the work to its wider effort to make its branch buildings more energy efficient. The interior and exterior were last fully redone in 2000.

Hours for reopening week

  • Monday, Oct. 19, through Thursday, Oct. 22: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Friday, Oct. 23, and Saturday, Oct. 24: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sunday: closed

Programs the first week back

The branch has a full slate on the calendar from day one. On Monday, the English Conversation Group meets at 10 a.m. in person and again at 11 a.m. online, and kids can make a sheep craft at Welcome to the Farm at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday brings Stencils and Pencils at 11 a.m. and Fall Fun Bingo at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday's Lapsit Storytime for babies and caregivers starts at 11:30 a.m. All library programs are free.

A branch older than the borough's NYPL ties

New Dorp's library predates its place in the city system. Residents started the New Dorp Community Library in 1907, and by 1909 it was borrowing books from NYPL's Traveling Library. It became an official NYPL branch in 1926.

How to get there

The library is at 309 New Dorp Lane, Staten Island, NY 10306, a short walk from the New Dorp station on the Staten Island Railway. The building is fully accessible. Call 718-351-2977 or email newdorp@nypl.org with questions.
