NYC Parks has a gallery inside Central Park, and its current show is about trees. New Dendrology, a group exhibition of eleven artists whose work deals with the study of trees and how people relate to them, is in its final week at the Arsenal Gallery on Fifth Avenue at 64th Street. It closes on Friday, November 6.
The show opened on September 11. Admission is free.
What is in the show
NYC Parks describes the exhibition as work that offers new ways for people to connect with their arboreal neighbors. Two pieces show the range. Matthew López-Jensen made The New York City Street Tree Tarot, a deck that visitors can use for a reading with the city's street trees, and his 2019 work The Bright Oak is the image Parks has used to promote the show. Laura Nova officiates commitment ceremonies between people and trees.
The eleven featured artists are Mariel Collard, Karin Giusti, Mark Heller, Anya Hoyer, Ekene Ijeoma, Gail Karlsson, sTo Len, Anthoula Lelekidis, Matthew López-Jensen, Amanda Lovelee and Laura Nova.
About the gallery
The Arsenal Gallery is on the third floor of the Arsenal Building, inside Central Park at 64th Street and Fifth Avenue. The gallery rotates exhibitions through the year; the show before this one, from June to August, was a selection of Jack Vartoogian's photographs of SummerStage performances.
The gallery is also where the department's annual Wreath Interpretations exhibition hangs in the holiday season. This year's open call for the 44th edition is running now, and Parks says entrants will be told by November 6 whether their wreaths were selected.
