Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria will screen the complete feature filmography of Stanley Kubrick, the Bronx-born director, on the big screen from Sunday, Nov. 1, through Sunday, Dec. 27. The series opens with something American audiences have not seen in a theater: the U.S. theatrical premiere of the International Version of The Shining.

The retrospective, presented with support from the Criterion Collection, is timed to Criterion's new box set, The Complete Kubrick. It runs from Kubrick's earliest features to his last, with most titles shown once and a few shown twice.

Opening day: two versions of The Shining

When The Shining came out in 1980, its reviews were mixed to negative, and Kubrick responded by cutting a shorter version for the European market, which he called the two-hour version. The museum's notes point out that Kubrick's longtime assistant Leon Vitali described that cut as the director's preferred one.

On Sunday, Nov. 1, at noon in the Redstone Theater, the museum screens that International Version in a 4K presentation, preceded by a conversation with Garrett Brown, the inventor of the Steadicam, and archivist Michael Chaiken. At 3:30 p.m. the same day, the original U.S. cut screens, so a viewer can watch both versions back to back and compare.

Tickets for the noon program are $17.50, $12 for seniors and students, $10 for youth and $7 for museum members, with a $1.50 fee per ticket on online orders. Seating is general admission, and tickets are picked up at the admissions desk.

The exhibition Overexposed: Art, Technology, and the Body, about how cinema and X-ray technology changed how people see the human form, is up through Jan. 3, 2027. And from Nov. 13 to Jan. 17, a second retrospective, The Minnellis, looks at the films of director Vincente Minnelli and his daughter, Liza Minnelli.
