The sixth floor of Jack D. Weiler Hospital at 1825 Eastchester Road has a rebuilt labor and delivery suite. Montefiore Einstein showed off the renovated Weiler Mother Baby Unit on Oct. 15, after a project paid for with a $9.68 million grant from New York's Statewide Health Care Facility Transformation Program.
The work touched nearly every part of the floor where Bronx babies arrive: the labor and delivery rooms, the operating rooms used for deliveries, the triage area where expectant parents are first seen, and the waiting room where families sit while they wait for news.
What changed on the sixth floor
Each labor and delivery room now has its own bathroom attached. The triage area was redone with six triage bays plus a separate bay for evaluation, which is where a patient is checked to see whether labor has started or whether something needs closer attention.
The maternal surgical suite was modernized as well. It now has a recovery area of its own for patients coming out of a cesarean section, with four bays, so a new parent recovering from surgery stays within the maternity unit instead of a general recovery space. The three operating rooms used for deliveries were also upgraded.
The nurses' and doctors' central station was reconfigured, and the layout of the unit was redrawn so staff move through it differently. Lighting was upgraded across the whole floor with patient comfort in mind. The hospital also added remote monitoring equipment so clinicians can keep watch on patients from outside the room, and it is offering new food choices for patients during their stay.
Built in phases, with the unit open the whole time
The renovation was split into six phases so the unit never had to close. Five are finished. The sixth covers the last two labor and delivery rooms and an upgrade to a back service elevator, and Montefiore Einstein expects it to be done in early 2027.
That matters for the neighborhood because Weiler handles a large share of the borough's complicated births. Montefiore Einstein says the hospital is the only regional perinatal center in the Bronx, meaning it takes the highest-risk pregnancies from across the borough and from part of Queens.
More doctors and new services for parents
The new space comes alongside a larger staff. Since Dr. Mark H. Einstein became chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Women's Health in 2024 (he holds the Chella and Moise Safra Endowed Chair), the department has brought on 26 new physicians. Their specialties include critical care obstetrics, adolescent medicine and onco-fertility, which helps people facing cancer treatment plan for future pregnancies. Nurse practitioners and physician assistants have been added too.
Several programs for new and expecting parents are growing at the same time:
- Depression screening for every patient in the hospital
- Care coordinated with psychiatrists who specialize in pregnancy and the postpartum period
- An outpatient clinic after delivery for people whose pregnancies were medically complex or high-risk
- A cardiac program focused on heart health during and after pregnancy
Dr. Einstein's leadership team helped design the new unit. Angela Gonzalez-Perez, vice president of operations and executive director of Weiler, and Dr. Rodney Wright, vice chair of obstetrics, joined staff and elected officials for the unveiling.
Where Weiler is and how to get there
Weiler is part of Montefiore Einstein's Einstein Campus on Eastchester Road, the same campus as the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. The Bx21 runs along Morris Park Avenue to Eastchester Road, and the Bx31 runs along Eastchester Road to the hospital. The Bx12 also serves the area, with a transfer to the Bx31.
Families planning a delivery at Weiler can find the hospital's obstetrics practices and childbirth information on the Montefiore Einstein website, where the Weiler campus is listed under Locations, along with driving and parking directions for the Einstein Campus. The last two delivery rooms are scheduled to reopen in early 2027.
