Montague Street goes car-free for the last time this year on Sunday, Oct. 25, and the Montague Street Business Improvement District is closing the season with dogs in costume, a caller-led square dance in the middle of the street and soccer drills with Gotham FC. The street is closed to traffic from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. between Clinton and Hicks Streets in Brooklyn Heights, and everything on the program is free to watch or join.
The finale program
- Noon to 2 p.m., dog costume contest. Dogs compete near Montague Diner at 148 Montague Street, which is also supplying the sound system. Spectators can cheer from the sidelines.
- Noon to 2 p.m., face painting. Ciara Halligan Art paints between Clinton and Henry Streets, near the diner.
- Noon to 4 p.m., square dance. Caller Sammy Osmund leads, with live music from the band the katydids. No experience is needed, and dancers can bring a partner or come alone.
- Noon to 5 p.m., Gotham FC. The National Women's Soccer League club sets up between Clinton and Henry Streets with soccer tips, skill practice and team giveaways.
- Noon to 5 p.m., wood carving. Carver Dennis J. Taylor works in front of the Brooklyn Women's Exchange at 137 Montague Street.
- 1 to 4 p.m., kids' soccer. Soccer Stars brings balls and nets for drills and games at every skill level, between Clinton and Henry.
The Sunday regulars
The fixtures that have run every Sunday of the season are out one more time. Miss Piera of Le Meraviglie Art Studio runs free art activities for children from noon to 5 p.m. in front of the studio at 108 Montague Street; adults have to stay with their kids. There is giant street chess, oversized lawn games and sidewalk chalk. Restaurants and cafés along the block serve outdoors all day, and shops along the closed stretch are open, with businesses and community partners running samples, demos and giveaways.
Seven Sundays on Montague
This is the BID's Open Streets season on Montague, which began on Sunday, Sept. 13, and has closed the block between Clinton and Hicks, the stretch that runs down toward the Promenade, every Sunday since. It is presented by the Montague Street BID with the Brooklyn Heights Association and the city's Department of Transportation, which runs the Open Streets program citywide. Schedule updates are posted on the BID's Open Streets page and on Instagram at @montaguebid and @brooklynheightsassociation.
How to go
The closure runs Sunday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Montague Street between Clinton and Hicks Streets. The 2 and 3 trains stop at Clark Street, and the R, 2, 3, 4 and 5 stop at Court Street-Borough Hall, both a short walk away. Bring the dog's costume by noon.
