Long Island City has a new place for parents of small children to spend a morning. Mimloo, a play cafe for kids from birth to age 6 and the adults who bring them, is open at 21-46 44th Drive, a block from the Court Square station, with a play space, a cafe, a small shop and a daily schedule of classes.

The business describes itself as founded by parents, for parents, and its pitch is simple: the children play while the grown-ups get a coffee, a meal, a laptop hour or a conversation, all in the same room. It is not a drop-off. A parent or caregiver stays with the child for the whole visit.

What is inside

The play space is built for babies, toddlers and preschoolers, with play staff on the floor who are trained in CPR. There are high chairs, changing tables and a stroller park by the entrance, and the entrance is step-free, with wide aisles and an accessible restroom.

The cafe serves coffee from Partners Coffee, which roasts a few blocks away in Long Island City, and every dish on the menu comes in a kids' version. Posted prices include a latte at $6.40, a drip coffee at $4.15 and a matcha at $7.45. Outside food is not allowed, with exceptions for baby food, formula and allergy-specific snacks, which staff ask families to mention at check-in.

Classes every weekday

Mimloo runs classes every weekday in small groups of six to 10 children. The lineup covers music and movement, sensory play, creative workshops, story time and sports. Non-members pay roughly $30 to $50 a class, according to the business. The space also hosts birthday parties, baby showers and private playdates.

What it costs

The first visit is free, with no minimum spend. After that, walk-ins are welcome any day during open hours with a $35 minimum per visit, which can go toward anything in the cafe or the shop, or toward a class.

A membership costs $450 a month or $4,500 a year, which the business notes works out to two months free. It covers up to six people on one family profile and includes unlimited open play, one class a day, no minimum spend and 10 percent off everything. On holidays the space is open to members only, with limited hours on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

Before you go

Every family signs a liability and play-space waiver before its first visit. It is online, takes a couple of minutes, and one waiver covers every child and caregiver on the family's profile. The website also shows how busy the space is in real time, which is useful before a rainy-day trip. The house rules ask visitors to skip strong fragrances, to photograph only their own children, and to bring a change of clothes for the little one.

Hours and getting there

Mimloo is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 21-46 44th Drive in Long Island City, between the Queensboro Bridge and the East River. The Court Square stop on the 7, E, M and G lines is about a block away. Questions go to hello@mimloo.com or (914) 410-6966.
