The McCarren Play Center on Lorimer Street is running free weekly fitness classes through November under NYC Parks' Shape Up NYC program, from a Monday night interval class to a Saturday morning Bollywood dance workout.

Every class is free with registration, and each one is pitched at all fitness levels.

The weekly lineup

Bodyweight Interval Training, Mondays, 6 to 7 p.m. A low-impact mix of cardio and bodyweight strength moves that works the whole body, with modifications offered for every level. Bring your own yoga mat. The instructor is Harriet Carter-Range, in Multi-Use Room C.

Body-Centric Circuit Training, Wednesdays, 6 to 6:45 p.m. A low-impact bodyweight circuit for strength and endurance, with a mindfulness thread running through it. The instructor is Tonisha Reid, in Multi-Use Room A.

BollyX, Saturdays, 10 to 11 a.m. A cardio dance class set to music from across India, with easy-to-follow choreography and no dance experience needed. The instructor is Anushya Mani, in Multi-Use Room A. This Saturday's October 31 session is canceled; the class picks up again on November 7 and November 14.

Dates through mid-November

  • Bodyweight Interval Training: October 26, November 2, 9 and 16
  • Body-Centric Circuit Training: October 28, November 4 and 18
  • BollyX: November 7 and 14

Before you go

Participants sign in at the front desk, and bags are not allowed in the class rooms, so bring a lock for your belongings. Only a towel, water and a phone come into the room. Comfortable shoes and water are all the BollyX class asks for.

One scheduling note: from Thursday, October 22, through Wednesday, November 4, the gymnasium at McCarren Play Center is closed while it serves as a polling site for early voting and the general election. The fitness classes meet in the multi-use rooms.
