Kato Sake Works, the sake brewery and taproom at 379 Troutman Street in Bushwick, has a full week on its calendar: a gallery opening, three nights of jazz, an Indonesian food pop-up, a guided tasting and a weekly jam session that has just moved in. The brewery describes its sake as born in Tokyo and made in Brooklyn, and it brews on site.

Tuesday: a book club with no assigned reading

The taproom's BYO Book Club meets Tuesday, November 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. There is no assigned book. People bring whatever they are reading, talk about it, and can browse the taproom's new library shelf. No sign-up is required.

Wednesday: a new show on the walls

On Wednesday, November 4, from 6 to 9 p.m., the brewery holds an opening reception for The New York Town Musicians, a solo show of work by Hikaru Yamamoto, which hangs in the taproom.

Friday and Saturday: jazz in a taproom

The John Kasper Trio plays Friday, November 6, and Subtle Delivery plays Saturday, November 7, both from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Kato Sake Works is a taproom rather than a music venue, and it describes the setup as closer to a coffee shop or house show: a small stage, and music to listen to over a glass of sake. Live music nights carry a one-drink minimum, with a $10 suggested donation for the performers.

Saturday afternoon: Makan Fusion returns

Before the music on Saturday, the pop-up Makan Fusion is back from 2 to 8 p.m. with Indonesian fusion food, including bao and rice balls. Vegan and gluten-free options are on the menu.

Sunday: learn the styles, then a jam session

The brewery's School of Sake runs a guided tasting on Sunday, November 8, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. A taproom bartender leads guests through several styles of sake and explains how production choices change the result, with discussion of flavor, aroma, texture and serving temperature. It is a 90-minute session with limited seating, aimed at both newcomers and longtime sake drinkers; tickets are sold through Eventbrite from the brewery's events page.

That evening, from 7 to 10 p.m., the Ba'sik Jazz Jam Session, curated by Matt La Von and powered by Keyed Up Jazz, holds a session at the brewery, which the organizers now call home. Musicians can bring an instrument and sit in on jazz standards, and listeners are welcome too. The same one-drink minimum and suggested donation apply.

Next week: design your own label

Looking a little further ahead, the calligrapher Taisan returns on Wednesday, November 11, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., to teach Japanese calligraphy. Each participant designs a custom label for a Kato Sake Works bottle. Tickets are linked from the events page.

How to go

Kato Sake Works is at 379 Troutman Street, Brooklyn, NY 11237, a short walk from the Jefferson St stop on the L train. Walk-in bottle purchases are available at the brewery, and the brewery also ships within New York State.
