Miles Davis's time in New York started at Juilliard. A century after his birth, Juilliard Jazz and the Apollo are marking the anniversary on 125th Street with a week of performances built around four of his landmark albums: Birth of the Cool, Filles de Kilimanjaro, Bitches Brew and Kind of Blue.

What is on, night by night

All of the performances are at The Apollo Stages at The Victoria, the Apollo's newer venue a few doors from its main hall.

  • Birth of the Cool: Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 7:30 p.m.
  • Filles de Kilimanjaro: Wednesday, Nov. 18, and Thursday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m.
  • Kind of Blue: Friday, Nov. 20, at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 21, at 2:30 p.m.

The Apollo describes the series as multidisciplinary performances honoring the albums, which trace how Davis kept changing the sound of jazz, from bebop to cool jazz, then post-bop and fusion.

A talk before the music

Before the Friday, Nov. 20, performance of Kind of Blue, author and Juilliard faculty member Fredara Hadley moderates a preconcert lecture at 6:30 p.m. in the Apollo's Procope Theater.

A school day show

On Thursday, Nov. 19, at 10:30 a.m., the Apollo and Juilliard Jazz are also staging a School Day Live performance of the program for middle and high school students.

The room and the tickets

The Kind of Blue performances are in Victoria Theater 1, a 199-seat flexible black box with an intimate, lounge-like setup. Tickets for Kind of Blue are $25, plus fees. Doors open at 6 p.m. for the Friday evening show and at 1 p.m. for the Saturday matinee. Tickets for every program are sold through Ticketmaster or in person at the box office at The Apollo Stages at The Victoria, which opens two hours before each performance. Groups of ten or more can book through the Apollo's group sales office.
