The Kupferberg Holocaust Center at Queensborough Community College in Bayside hosts poet Joshua Weiner on Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 12:15 to 2 p.m., for a reading and discussion of his translations of Nelly Sachs, the German-Swedish poet and playwright who survived the Holocaust and received the Nobel Prize in Literature.

The book

Weiner's translations appear in his book Flight and Metamorphosis. At the reading he will discuss the depth and spiritual longing he found in Sachs's work, and why the center considers it vital reading today.

Sachs, a German-Swedish poet and playwright, survived the Holocaust and shared the 1966 Nobel Prize in Literature with Shmuel Agnon.

Part of a poetry series

The reading belongs to the center's series Remembering the Holocaust Through Poetry, which brings poets and translators to campus. The series is co-sponsored by the Legacy Foundation at Mount Hebron Cemetery, Manhattan University and Rutgers, among others.

In person or online

The program can be attended on campus or online, with separate registration links for each. The center's programs are free and open to the public as space allows, and registration is required.
