Inwood Hill Park, the forest at the northern tip of Manhattan, has three free programs in the coming week, all of them run in or around its Nature Center at West 218th Street and Indian Road. None needs a registration.
Wednesday, Nov. 4: Nature Book Club
The NYC Parks Urban Park Rangers hold their monthly nature book club from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Nature Center. This month's book is H Is for Hawk, Helen Macdonald's memoir of training a goshawk in the year after her father's death. The rangers ask that people finish the book before coming. It is free.
Saturday, Nov. 7: NYRR Open Run
New York Road Runners holds its Open Run in Inwood Hill Park every Saturday from 8:45 to 10:30 a.m. It is a free, community-led 5K for runners and walkers at any pace. The series has been on the park's calendar since 2023 and is scheduled to continue into 2029.
Wednesday, Nov. 11: Fall bird watching
The rangers' monthly Nature Exploration Hike goes out from the Inwood Hill Nature Center from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on November 11, which is Veterans Day. This month's walk focuses on the birds passing through and settling in for the fall. It is free, with no registration.
About the park
NYC Parks describes Inwood Hill Park's caves, valleys and ridges as the work of retreating glaciers, and its forest and salt marsh as the last natural ones left in Manhattan. All three programs start from the Nature Center on the Indian Road side of the park.
Getting there
The A train's Inwood-207 St station is about four blocks from the Nature Center, and the 1 train stops at 215 St. The Urban Park Rangers answer questions about their programs at (212) 304-2277.
