Green-Wood Cemetery is about as colorful as it gets all year this week, and the cemetery has scheduled a run of walks to match. Between Friday, Nov. 6, and Saturday, Nov. 14, its calendar includes a fall foliage walk, a tour on the meaning of gravestone carvings, an early bird walk before the gates open and two evenings of After Hours tours that end inside the Catacombs.
The cemetery sits in Greenwood Heights at the northern edge of Sunset Park, with its main entrance at Fifth Avenue and 25th Street.
Saturday, Nov. 7
Secrets in Stone, from 3 to 5 p.m., is a walking tour on the symbols the Victorians carved into their monuments: the flowers, the angels and the emblems that meant something specific to the people who chose them.
Green-Wood After Hours runs twice that evening, from 5 to 7 p.m. and from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. It is a walk after dark through the cemetery's history and legends, and it finishes with a visit inside the Catacombs, which are normally closed to the public.
Sunday, Nov. 8
Sunday starts early. Birding In Peace, from 6:30 to 8 a.m., goes out before the gates open to look for the birds that stop at Green-Wood on migration. A members-only version for late risers, led by birder Rob Jett, follows from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Green-Wood's Greatest Hits, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., is a general walking tour of the grounds for individuals and families.
Catch the Colors: Fall at Green-Wood, from 2 to 4 p.m., is built around the cemetery's thousands of trees at the height of their autumn color.
Friday, Nov. 6, and Saturday, Nov. 14
For children, the cemetery's TGIF! Afterschool Story and Craft Hour runs Friday, Nov. 6, from 2 to 4 p.m.
The After Hours tour repeats on Saturday, Nov. 14, again at 5 and 5:30 p.m., with the same Catacombs visit at the end.
Tickets and getting there
Each program has its own page on the Green-Wood website with its price and meeting point, and tickets are sold in advance online. The cemetery is currently offering $5 off a walking tour with the code SAVE5.
The R train stops at 25th Street, one block from the main gate at Fifth Avenue and 25th Street. Dress for the weather: the walks go ahead outdoors, and the grounds are hilly.
