Friday, Oct. 30, is a big night for Tribeca's galleries. At least a half dozen new exhibitions open that evening along lower Broadway and on Franklin Street, and several galleries are holding receptions that anyone can walk into for free. The week bookends it with a Wednesday group show on Reade Street and a Saturday opening on Walker Street.
Here is what is opening, gallery by gallery, all verified with the galleries themselves.
Wednesday, Oct. 28
SYSTEMATIC at Garvey|Simon, 143 Reade Street. A group show of seven abstract painters (Christopher Adams, Sue Beyer, Paul Corio, Amy Cheng, Rob de Oude, Christine Romanell and Sung Won Yun) opens with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Artisan Lofts building. The show runs through May 2, 2027, and after opening night it can be seen by appointment.
Friday, Oct. 30
25 | 250: A Celebration of American Art, Part II at Schoelkopf Gallery, 390 Broadway, third floor. The gallery marks its 25th year with a second round of American paintings, this time by Winslow Homer, Marsden Hartley, Andrew Wyeth, Stuart Davis, Thomas Hart Benton, Arshile Gorky, Joseph Stella, Patrick Henry Bruce, Richard Estes and Mary Abbott. Schoelkopf was founded in 2001 as Menconi + Schoelkopf; Part I hung last January and February. The opening reception is 6 to 8 p.m., and the show is up through Dec. 11. Hours are Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, noon to 5 p.m.
Tamara Gonzales, Brujas, at Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery, 87 Franklin Street. New paintings made from looping lines, scribbles and hand-drawn marks that build into loose grids. The gallery says the series grew out of the artist's walks through fields near her home in upstate New York. The reception is 6 to 8 p.m.; the show runs through Dec. 12, Tuesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Emily Coan, My Alchemical Vessel, at DIMIN, 406 Broadway, second floor. A new series of oil paintings set inside her in-laws' 18th-century farmhouse in Ghent, N.Y. The rooms are lit like old European genre scenes, but a bag of Doritos, a deck of tarot cards and an iPhone turn up among the props. Friends and family posed for the figures, and Coan appears in one large canvas. Reception 6 to 8 p.m.; on view through Dec. 5.
Steve Locke, I Said What I Said, at Alexander Gray Associates, 384 Broadway. Recent paintings, sculpture and neon that return to subjects Locke has worked on for years, among them desire, racial violence, portraiture and the act of looking. On view through Dec. 12, Tuesday to Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Jane Benson, her her, at Sargent's Daughters, 370 Broadway. Large text drawings in graphite on polyester film, mounted on iridescent acrylic in shades of yellow, that rework Mary Shelley's Frankenstein through the creature's own narration. Benson, born in England in 1973, has held a Fulbright Scholarship and a Pollock-Krasner Grant. On view through Dec. 5.
Saturday, Oct. 31
Maureen O'Leary, The Linden Trees, at Cristin Tierney Gallery, 49 Walker Street. A single installation of 34 oil paintings paired with 35 text panels, made between 2021 and 2023. It runs through Dec. 19.
Planning the night
The Broadway galleries sit in a tight cluster: 370, 384, 390 and 406 Broadway are all between Leonard Street and Walker Street, so you can see four shows in under an hour on foot. Klaus von Nichtssagend on Franklin Street is a block west. The closest subway stops are Canal St (J, Z, N, Q, R, W and 6 trains), Franklin St (1 train) and Canal St on the A, C and E lines.
Gallery openings are free and open to the public, with no ticket needed. Times listed above come from each gallery's own page; where a gallery did not post a reception time, plan on regular hours or check its website the day of. Hours can change, and the Tribeca Arts District keeps a running list of all neighborhood openings on its events page.
