Eataly is bringing its quick-service café to the Upper West Side. The company says Eataly Caffè Upper West Side will open at 2252 Broadway, near West 81st Street, on Friday, November 6, with the doors opening at 3 p.m.

It is the fourth Eataly Caffè in Manhattan. The other three sit inside some of the busiest corners of the borough: 20 Hudson Yards, 1230 Avenue of the Americas at Rockefeller Center, and 1122 Lexington Avenue on the Upper East Side.

What Eataly Caffè is

Eataly Caffè is the smaller, faster sibling of the Italian marketplaces in the Flatiron District, SoHo and Lower Manhattan. Instead of aisles of pasta and a sit-down restaurant, it is a counter built around coffee. Eataly describes the menu as espresso drinks, freshly baked pastries and gelato, with savory food in the form of Roman-style pizza alla pala, the long, rectangular pizza that is baked on a wooden paddle and cut to order by the slice.

The format is built for a stop on the way somewhere: a cappuccino and a cornetto before the train, a slice at lunch, a cup of gelato after a walk in Riverside Park. For a stretch of Broadway that already has a lot of foot traffic between the 79th Street and 86th Street stations on the 1 line, that is the point.

Ordering ahead

Eataly Caffè runs its own mobile app, which works only at the Eataly Caffè locations rather than at the larger Eataly stores. Eataly says a first order placed through the app comes with a free Eataly Signature chocolate while supplies last. The app is the way to skip the line on a morning when the counter is busy.

Where it fits on the block

The address puts the café on Broadway in the low 80s, a few minutes from the American Museum of Natural History at Central Park West and 79th Street, and a short walk from Riverside Park at the end of West 81st. Broadway between 79th and 86th streets is one of the neighborhood's main shopping blocks, with the 1 train stopping at both ends.

Eataly has listed the Upper West Side location on its store directory as coming soon for most of the fall, and is hiring a full team for it, including café leads and tipped team members, through its careers site. The November 6 date and 3 p.m. opening time come from Eataly's own Eataly Caffè page.

Hours and details

Eataly has not yet posted regular daily hours for the Broadway café. For comparison, the Lexington Avenue Eataly Caffè on the Upper East Side is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Check Eataly's site before a first visit for the Upper West Side hours once they are listed.
