The Crown Heights branch of the Brooklyn Public Library is hosting an afternoon that starts with a lesson and ends with a parade. On Friday, Oct. 30, Kiskeya Collections, one of the library's community partners, teaches a Drumming and Folklore Workshop for pre-teens and teenagers from 4 to 5 p.m. in the branch auditorium, and then the whole group heads out onto the street.
The workshop
The hour-long session is built for young people and covers the history behind the drum along with folklore, music history and storytelling from traditions around the world. It is interactive, with questions and hands-on playing encouraged, and no experience is needed. The library lists no fee for it.
Then the procession
When the workshop ends, everyone is invited to walk with the youth drumming procession band from the library to the nearby Antilles Cafe. There, the evening continues with an outdoor movie night for families, with free hot chocolate and goodie bags. Parents, siblings and neighbors who did not take the workshop are welcome to join the walk and the movie.
Who is behind it
Kiskeya Collections presents the program as a youth-centered celebration of heritage and community through music and story. The library lists it among its teen programs and its community-partner series.
Getting there
The Crown Heights Library is at 560 New York Avenue, at Maple Street. The 2 and 5 trains stop at Sterling Street, a short walk from the branch.
Arrive at the library auditorium by 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, for the workshop, or join the procession when the workshop ends for the walk to Antilles Cafe and the movie.
