Coney Island's Halloween night ends at the movies, outdoors and free. NYC Parks and the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment are screening Hocus Pocus in Asser Levy Park on Saturday, October 31, and the Coney Island Library on Mermaid Avenue has a swing dance class the same evening and a week of free classes after it. Here is the week.

Saturday night: Hocus Pocus in Asser Levy Park

The Movies Under the Stars series closes out October with the 1993 Disney comedy Hocus Pocus, in which three 17th-century witches are brought back to life on Halloween in modern-day Salem by a boy who then has to figure out how to put them back. The screening is set up at the Asser Levy Park play area, with the listing running from 6 to 8 p.m. and the film starting at dusk. It is rated PG, and NYC Parks notes some material may not suit young children.

Bring a blanket. Admission is free and open to everyone; glass bottles and alcohol are not allowed. In heavy rain or extreme weather the screening may be canceled, and NYC Parks says it will post any cancellation on its website before the show. The West 8th Street-NY Aquarium station on the F and Q is the closest stop.

Saturday evening: swing dance at Coney Island Library

If you would rather dance than sit, the Coney Island Library holds a free swing dance class on Saturday, October 31, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Meeting Room 3. A second session follows on Tuesday, November 3, at the same time. The classes are supported by a grant from Luna Park in Coney Island, the amusement park on Surf Avenue. The library is at 1901 Mermaid Avenue near West 19th Street.

Thursday: art lessons for kids

On Thursday afternoons, children take free art lessons at the branch from artist Alicia Degener, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sessions run October 29 and November 5. The program is supported by a grant from State Assembly Member Alec Brook-Krasny.

Wednesday: hip hop for teens and tweens

On Wednesday, November 4, from 4 to 5:15 p.m., the library teaches hip hop dancing to teens and tweens, along with the history of the culture behind it. It is free.

Looking ahead: the Coney Island Film Festival

Filmmakers who want to show work in Coney Island next spring have time: Coney Island USA's 27th annual Coney Island Film Festival runs April 30 to May 2, 2027, and its call for entries is open, with a late deadline of December 18, 2026 and a final deadline of February 12, 2027. The festival thanks Deno's Wonder Wheel Amusement Park, Luna Park NYC and Eldorado Auto Skooter among its sponsors.

How to go

Everything above is free. The D, F, N and Q trains end at Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue, a short walk from the library. Check the NYC Parks event page on Saturday for weather updates on the screening, and the Brooklyn Public Library calendar for class changes.
