Carroll Gardens is about to get its library back. Brooklyn Public Library says the Carroll Gardens Library at 396 Clinton Street will reopen on Tuesday, December 1, at 2 p.m., after a two-part renovation, with a new teen space, updated building systems and restored historic details.

To get ready, the temporary Carroll Gardens Pop-Up Library at 250 Baltic Street will close for good on Friday, November 6. For the three-plus weeks in between, the branch will be closed in both locations.

What changed inside

The library calls the building one of Brooklyn's Carnegie branches. It has served the neighborhood for more than 100 years, and its 14,000-plus-square-foot main room still has its original barrel-vaulted ceiling. The renovation kept that and worked around it.

The first part of the work, run by the city's Department of Design and Construction, built a new teen space on the mezzanine level, installed a new heating and cooling system, added new architectural lighting across the main floor and upgraded the fire alarm and safety systems. The second part, run by the library itself, covers a modernized elevator, renovated bathrooms, a water fountain, new and restored shelving and other interior improvements. The library's fall update says the major milestones are finished and the last, six-month phase is well along.

The library lists the branch's most popular programs as Toddler Time and wellness activities for older adults, and both have kept running during the closure. This fall, Toddler Time and Babies & Books have been meeting at St. Paul's Episcopal Church nearby.

Who paid for it

The library credits State Senator Andrew Gounardes, Council Member Shahana Hanif, Assemblymember Jo Anne Simon and the participatory budgeting voters of Council District 39, along with mayoral and City Council capital funds. The pop-up on Baltic Street, outfitted with furniture donated by IKEA Brooklyn, was made possible by the same three elected officials.

Before and after the reopening

Until November 6, the Baltic Street pop-up stays open on its reduced weekly schedule, posted on the branch page, for borrowing, returns and holds pickup. Anyone with holds waiting should collect them before it closes.

From December 1, the branch is back at 396 Clinton Street. The F and G trains stop at Carroll Street, two blocks away. Neighbors who want to help the branch can join the Friends of Carroll Gardens Library by emailing friends@bklynlibrary.org.
