Coney Island USA is offering a hands-on class this November in the craft that built the neighborhood's rides: carving a carousel horse. Master carver Bob Yorburg will lead a four-session Carousel Carving Class at the Coney Island Museum on Surf Avenue, where each student carves a miniature replica of a Stein & Goldstein carousel horse to take home.

The class

The class meets on two weekends, Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 7 and 8, and Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 14 and 15, from noon to 5 p.m. each day. That is 20 hours of carving across the four sessions. The fee is $350, and Coney Island USA says space is limited.

Students are not painting a kit or assembling parts. According to Coney Island USA, the class has each person create their own small-scale model of a horse in the style of Stein & Goldstein, working under Yorburg's direction.

Where it happens

The Coney Island Museum is in Coney Island USA's building at 1208 Surf Avenue, home of the Coney Island Circus Sideshow; the organization also produces the Mermaid Parade. The carving class overlaps with another Coney Island USA course this November, its Coney Island Clown Skool, which holds its kickoff show on Nov. 8.

Also coming up at Coney Island USA

On Sunday, Nov. 22, from 4 to 6 p.m., Bindlestiff Family Cirkus presents its Cavalcade of Youth at Coney Island USA, a variety show in which every performer is under 21. Tickets are $10 for anyone under 21 and $15 for adults, held at will call.
