The PUBLIC hotel on Chrystie Street has a new restaurant. Buddy & Son, a brasserie, cafe and bar, is now open inside the hotel at 215 Chrystie Street on the Lower East Side, serving dinner seven nights a week from 5 p.m. with a menu that runs from a raw bar to a $225 steak for two.
The menu
The menu is built from familiar dishes, mostly French brasserie standards with some American and Italian ones alongside. The raw bar sells oysters at $4 each, littleneck clams at $2.50, shrimp cocktail at $20 for four, and fluke crudo with avocado, shallot and Aleppo pepper. Broiled oysters come with barbecue butter and pickled apple. A seafood tower at $30 per person brings two each of oysters, clams, shrimp cocktail and preserved mussels with a smoked fish dip.
Starters include a crab cake with gribiche, beef tartare with Dijon and sourdough, a Lyonnaise salad with bacon, egg and Point Reyes blue cheese, and a chicory salad with chickpeas, salami and smoked mozzarella.
The main plates mix pasta and the brasserie standards: spaghetti with tomato and basil, bucatini with crab, rigatoni with short-rib ragu, mussels in saffron and fennel, skate wing with cranberry beans and olives, Dover sole in brown butter at $78, a half heritage chicken, steak frites with a Denver steak and sauce Lyonnaise, and a burger with cheddar and green tomato. The steak for two, at $225, comes with maître d'hôtel butter.
A seasonal section currently lists a warm beet salad, honeynut squash tortelloni with brown butter and sage, and a cassoulet with confit duck and andouille sausage. Sides include Parker House rolls with cultured butter, potato puree, and mushrooms with cognac and crème fraîche.
At the bar
The house cocktails are the Park Avenue, Le Métro, Belle Époque, La Mayor, Élysées and City Sunset, most at $21. Classics include a Sazerac, a daiquiri, a sidecar and a French 75, and there are three martinis, including a Vesper. Four zero-proof drinks run $16 to $18, and the beers include Kronenbourg 1664 and Brooklyn East IPA. The wine list starts with Prosecco at $18 a glass and runs to a 2014 Château Branaire-Ducru from Saint-Julien at $65 a glass.
