Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and Brooklyn Arts Ambassador Colm Dillane are looking for the next Brooklyn pin, and anyone who lives in the borough can submit a design. The 2027 Brooklyn Pin Design Competition opened on October 13, and entries are due by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, December 6.
What the pin is
The Brooklyn pin is a limited-edition lapel pin the borough president's office gives out as a mark of borough pride. The tradition goes back to Marty Markowitz, who handed out gold Brooklyn pins lettered in a Dodgers-style script during his years in office. The 2026 edition was designed by Mellina Melezhik, a resident of southern Brooklyn, and took its look from the subway, spelling out the borough's name in a graffiti-style typeface.
The winning 2027 design will be unveiled at the borough president's 2027 State of the Borough address, and people in the audience that day will be the first to receive one.
Who can enter
The competition is open to Brooklyn residents of any age and to students who attend a kindergarten through 12th grade school in Brooklyn, even if they live elsewhere. Entrants under 18 need consent from a parent or guardian. Every design must be original, and designs made with artificial intelligence are not accepted.
Design rules
The design has to include legible text that names Brooklyn. Nicknames and stylized spellings such as BK or BKLYN count. The borough president's office lists maximum pin widths of 1.29 and 1.49 inches; the page also gives metric figures that do not match those, so entrants should check the size requirements on the application itself before finishing a design.
Accepted file types are PDF, DOC, DOCX, JPG, JPEG, PNG, EPS, SVG and Adobe Illustrator files.
How the winner is picked
Reynoso and Dillane will choose one design. Dillane is the creative force behind the brand KidSuper, and he was named Brooklyn's first Arts Ambassador in 2025, when he redesigned a limited run of the official pin himself. After the pick, the borough president's office will work with the winning designer on any changes needed to manufacture it.
How to enter
Submit a design through the application at brooklynbp.nyc.gov/2027-pin-design-competition/ by 11:59 p.m. on December 6, 2026.
