The Brooklyn Museum is turning Halloween into a manga-themed family day. On Saturday, October 31, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Halloween Family Day: Art, Treats, and Beats fills the building at 200 Eastern Parkway with a candy trail through the galleries, chibi-style costume portraits, a dance party and parade, and drop-in art making. Costumes and cosplay are encouraged, and children 19 and under get in free.
The day takes its cue from two shows now on view: Art of Manga, which runs through January 31, 2027, and Mika Ninagawa: Feel the Flow(ers).
What is on, and where
- Stamp 'n' Treat, 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.: a gallery excursion where kids collect stamps as they move through the museum.
- Halloween candy bags: handed out on the first and third floors.
- Manga Me! chibi portraits: a local artist draws visitors in costume in chibi style, the small, big-headed manga look, in the Beaux-Arts Court on the third floor.
- Drop-in art making: in the Education Gallery on the first floor.
- A Parent(ly) Kidding with Vashtie Kola, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m.: a family dance party and costume parade in the Beaux-Arts Court.
- Pop-up talks, noon to 3 p.m., in the galleries.
- Gallery tour, 1 to 2 p.m.
Art-making stations are first come, first served, and children must be with an adult.
What it costs
The family day is included with museum admission. General admission is free for anyone 19 and under. For adults the suggested admission is $20, and $14 for visitors 65 and older and for students, and the museum lets visitors pay what they can at the admissions desk. A family of two adults and two children pays a suggested $40, or less.
The shows behind the theme
Art of Manga stays on view through January 31, 2027, so families who come for the parade have until the end of January to return for a closer look. Check the museum's tickets page for any exhibition-specific pricing.
