The Brooklyn Children's Museum is staying open late on Halloween and mixing in anime. Its Celebrate Halloween day on Saturday, October 31, runs from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., an hour and a half past the museum's usual 5 p.m. close, with trick-or-treating through the building, a costume runway, live animals, anime art making and storytimes led by professional cosplayers.

The museum is presenting the day with AniTOMO Con, and it bills the result as Halloween colliding with anime in a celebration of candy, costumes and Japanese culture.

What children can do

  • Trick-or-treat around the museum, moving through the galleries at 145 Brooklyn Avenue.
  • Walk the costume runway, for kids who want an audience for their outfit.
  • Meet creepy crawly animals.
  • Make anime art, at drop-in art stations.
  • Storytimes with professional cosplayers.

Costumes are the point of the day, and anime costumes fit the theme, though any costume works for trick-or-treating.

Open later than usual

On a normal Saturday the museum closes at 5 p.m. On Halloween it stays open until 6:30 p.m., so families can fit a visit in before or after trick-or-treating on their own blocks.

What it costs

Museum admission is $15 per person, and the Celebrate Halloween page links to the museum's regular ticketing. Members get in free and get discounted admission for guests. The museum also offers discounted admission through select partner programs. Its free Community Access hours are on Thursdays from 2 to 5 p.m., so they do not apply on Halloween, a Saturday.

Tickets can be reserved ahead of time on the museum's site.
