Barclays Center has finished the third phase of its five-year renovation, and the biggest changes are in the part of the arena every ticket holder walks through first: the Main Atrium and box office at the corner of Atlantic and Flatbush avenues. Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment, which runs the arena and the Brooklyn Nets, announced the work on Oct. 21, timed to the start of the Nets' 60th anniversary season.

What changed at the front door

The atrium now has a 180-degree LED wall alongside Sarah Sze's WAVE the installation of 550 LED screens hanging from the ceiling. The box office has been rebuilt with separate counters for ticket problems and for guest services. The traditional ticket windows facing Flatbush Avenue stay where they are.

Paintings by Mark Bradford and Rashid Johnson now hang in a new entrance off Flatbush Avenue, part of a multi-year art program the arena calls Brooklyn Art Encounters.

A piece of the old court

On the event level, the arena rebuilt a 9,000-square-foot club modeled on DUMBO, with steel trusses, brick and concrete, show kitchens run by Levy Restaurants, a pizza oven and a 93-foot LED screen. Hanging from its ceiling is a piece made from game-used sections of the Nets' original herringbone court, the floor the team played on from 2012 to 2019. The club also looks onto the practice court and the path players take to and from the locker rooms.

Behind the scenes

The phase also includes the first major upgrade to the arena's control room since Barclays Center opened in 2012: new broadcast cameras, instant replay, graphics and a move to an IP-based video system that runs what fans see on the arena's screens. A new American Express lounge on the Suite Level and a dedicated card member entrance were part of the same phase.

Who built it and what comes next

Populous, the architecture firm, led the design, and Shawmut Design and Construction managed the construction. Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment puts the full five-year program at more than $150 million. Phase three follows earlier additions including Gallagher Terrace, the Toki Row, JetBlue at The Key and the Modelo Bridge, and the remaining phases will concentrate on the upper concourse.

See it this week

The Nets play the Indiana Pacers at home on Sunday, Oct. 25, and the Detroit Pistons on Friday, Oct. 30. The band Rawayana plays the arena on Halloween, and the Nets host the Charlotte Hornets on Nov. 4. Barclays Center is at 620 Atlantic Avenue, directly above the Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr station (2, 3, 4, 5, B, D, N, Q and R) and next to the Long Island Rail Road's Atlantic Terminal.
