A Persian grill opens in Williamsburg this weekend. Āzar, from chef and founder Soroosh Golbabae, opens on Saturday, November 7, at 740 Driggs Avenue, at the corner of South Second Street.
The restaurant calls itself a Persian street grill, and its menu is built around three things, listed on its site in Farsi: kabab, loghmeh and sandwiches. Kabab is the grilled meat at the center of the Iranian table, cooked on skewers over fire. Loghmeh means a mouthful, and on Iranian streets it is the word for a small wrap of grilled meat and bread that can be eaten standing up. The sandwich completes the street-food lineup.
Who is behind it
Golbabae announced Āzar on his own Instagram in August as a Persian street grill in the heart of Brooklyn. The name Āzar is the Persian word for fire, and it is also the name of the ninth month of the Iranian calendar, which runs from late November into December.
The restaurant's site, written in English and Farsi, gives the opening date, the address and a mailing list for updates, and it links to the restaurant's Instagram for menus and hours as they are posted.
Getting there
740 Driggs Avenue is on the South Side of Williamsburg. The J, M and Z trains stop at Marcy Avenue, about a ten-minute walk away, and the L train's Bedford Avenue station is about a fifteen-minute walk north.
